I'm wondering if anyone has any reccomendations for a good external drive. I recently had a 500 GB one that died on me and I'm hesitant to get the same model since this one only lasted a couple months. Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks

i'd like some recommendations myself, since i'm not computer savvy enough to know what's a good model and brand and what sucks. Of course, there may be differing opinions out there, but any response would be nice.

The 750 GBIomega silver listed on Blind bargains from buy.com looks pretty good. I'm actually thinking about buying this drive myself. However, the deal apparently ends today:

that's where I got my last drive from. Not sure if I want to try my luck with the same company. Especially since the last one was a bargon deal as well.

i would suggest going with a western digital drive. depending on size, the MBook drives are good for large space, and the Passports are great for a portable drive with a good amount of storage

Why not get an external case and buy the drive of your choice to go in it? That's what we did, and I too would suggest Western Digital; no matter which rout you go.

I bought a 500 gig cavory external hard drive from buy.com and it is awesome. I think I've had it almost a year now and it still works fine for me.

I have had bad experiences with Sea Gate (not alone there) as well as Maxtor OneTouch, lost 300gb of data when that crashed (well had 250gb backed up, thank goodness). I've had good experiences with WD consistently, actually have no complaints with IOmega myself but could just be lucky. You might want to consider two cheap 500gb drives and use one as a back up, but a WD might also be just fine, I'd recommend going that route.

hi,
iff they make hard drives, I recommend Sandisk! I have a flash drive from them from a couple years back, when 512 mb was cool lol. i accidentally put it through a washer and it still works! sort of. a few weeks ago it was plugged in to my bn and it met the floor in a not very nice way... crying face.

I've had a LaCie 500GB hard drive for the last year or so. They travel extremely well, and don't seem too affected if they take a little bang. Min'es a frequent traveller, and still works fine. If you get one of the new Porsche designed ones, they're one of the smallest caddys on the market. They're really good.
